Windows 95 - Connecting

To configure your Windows 95 PC for alpha dot net access, complete the following instructions.

Note: Instructions for connecting with the Windows 95 Internet Connection Wizard (which may be easier for inexperienced users) are also available.

Step 1 - Setting up TCP/IP

Open control panel by clicking on StartSettingsControl Panel.

Double-click the Network icon.

If you are on a Local Area Network (LAN) then you should consult your Network Administrator before going any further, as changing the numbers in this section could result in the loss of your LAN connectivity.

Network Configuration

You need to have the following three network components installed:
Client For Microsoft Networks
Dial Up Adapter
TCP/IP
(If there are any other components installed, you may safely ignore them). If not, then you will need to add them.

To add Client for Microsoft Networking:
Click ADD, click CLIENT, click ADD, click MICROSOFT in the left-hand panel, Select Client for Microsoft Networking in the right-hand panel
Click OK.

To add Dial-up Adapter:
Click ADD, click ADAPTER, click ADD, click MICROSOFT in the left-hand panel, Select Dial-up Adapter in the right-hand panel
Click OK.

To add TCP/IP:
Click ADD, click PROTOCOL, click ADD, click MICROSOFT in the left-hand panel, Select TCP/IP in the right-hand panel
Click OK.

Step 2 - Configuring TCP/IP

Now you have TCP/IP installed we need to configure it. You should select TCP/IP then click Properties.

Select TCPIP

This should open a screen very similar to the one below, if not you should click on the IP Address tab. Configure as follows.

Obtain an IP address automatically

Obtain an IP address automatically: Checked

Click the DNS Configuration tab.

Disable DNS

Disable DNS: Checked

At this point you should click OK then click OK again. Your PC may look for your original Windows95 CD at this point.

After some disk activity and Building a Driver information database the PC will ask you to restart the computer. You should click Yes.

Your PC will now restart. This is a good time to go grab a cup of coffee or a sandwich ...

We can now set up Dial-up Networking.

Stage 2 - Dial-up Networking

Double-click on My Computer.

Double-click Dial-up Networking.

Make new connection

Now double-click the Make new connection icon and configure as follows.

alpha dot net -Standard 56000 bps Modem

Type a name for the computer you are dialing: alpha dot net
Select a modem: Select your modem
Probably – Standard 56000 bps Modem.

Click Next.

Click Next.

[Make new connection]

Click Finish.

In your Dial-Up Networking folder you should now see a new icon called alpha dot net.

There is one last stage to do, we now need to configure the properties of the alpha dot net connection icon.

Click on the icon with the Right mouse button, and select Properties.

Right-click - Connect - Properties

This will open the Properties options for your alpha dot net connection. Configure as follows.

Click the Server Types tab

Click the Server Types tab at the top of the window.

PPP: Windows 95, Windows NT 3.5, Internet - TCPIP

Type of Dial-Up Server: PPP: Windows 95, Windows NT 3.5, Internet

Ensure that the only box with a tick is TCP/IP, all the other boxes must be unticked.

Click the TCP/IP Settings button.

TServer assigned IP address: Checked
Server assigned name server address: Checked
Use IP header compression: Checked
Use default gateway on remore network: Checked

Now click OK until you get back to the dial-up networking folder itself.

You are now ready to try to connect!

Double-click the alpha dot net connection icon and this should open a screen like the one below.

yourusername - yourpassword

Username: yourusername
Password: yourpassword
Save password: Checked
This means you won't have to type your password evrytime you connect.

Your Windows 95 configuration is now complete.

You can now connect to alpha anytime by double-clicking the alpha dot net icon in Dial-Up networking (you could create a Shortcut of the alpha icon and put it on your desktop) and clicking Connect.

USERNAMES & PASSWORDS    
Usernames and passwords are case sensitive (MYusername is different to myusername, myPassword is different to mypassword) and should contain no spaces. Be sure your "CapsLock" is not on when typing them.
These not only identify you to us as clients, but they are vital to your security for email and connectivity. Always keep your password stored in a secure place.
