NT4 - Connecting

To configure your NT4 PC for alpha dot net access, complete the following instructions.

Step 1 - Installing Dial-up Networking

This is a step by step guide to install and set up Windows NT4 Dial-up Networking to connect to alpha dot net.

You will need your NT4 installation media (probably a CD) to complete this installation.

The first thing you have to do, is to install Dial-up Networking.

To do this, double-click on the My Computer icon at the top of your desktop.

You should be presented with a screen very similar to the one below.

Once this screen is open, you should double-click the Dial-up Networking icon

If you have not installed it before, you should be presented with the window shown below...

Click Install on this window.

This will install Dial-up Networking onto your PC.

Note: You will then be required to apply the service pack again to update Dial-up Networking.

After Dial-up Networking is installed you should be presented with a warning that the phone book is empty, as shown below.

Step 2 - Configuring Dial-up Networking

Click OK to add an entry - this should bring up the following screen.

This screen simply asks you to name your connection. You can call it anything you like but we suggest calling it alpha dot net.

Click Next.

I am calling the Internet: Checked
Send my plain text password if that's the only way to connect: Checked

Click Next.

Phone number: 82189000

Click Next.

[Dial up networking wizard]

Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP): Checked

Click Next.

[Dial up networking wizard]

None: Checked

Click Next.

[Dial up networking wizard]

Enter nothing here. Leave as 0.0.0.0

Click Next.

DNS server: 203.41.44.20
WINS server: Leave as it is (0.0.0.0)

Click Next.

Click Next.

Phonebook entry to dial: alpha dot net
Phone number preview: 82189000

Click More and select Edit entry and modem properties.

Configure as follows.

TCP/IP: Checked

Click TCP/IP Settings.

Server Assigned IP Address: Checked
Primary DNS: 203.41.44.20
Secondary DNS: 203.41.220.30

Click the OK button until you are back to the screen where it says Dial at the bottom of the window.

When you are back to this screen click Dial, this should bring up the following screen.

Username: yourusername
Password: yourpassword
Save password: Checked

It is very important to note that there should be nothing in the Domain: field. If there is something entered in this field, the connection attempt may fail.

After clicking OK, the modem should dial and connect to alpha dot net.

Your setup of Windows NT4 is now complete.

USERNAMES & PASSWORDS    
Usernames and passwords are case sensitive (MYusername is different to myusername, myPassword is different to mypassword) and should contain no spaces. Be sure your "CapsLock" is not on when typing them.
These not only identify you to us as clients, but they are vital to your security for email and connectivity. Always keep your password stored in a secure place.
