IE 4 - Web Browser Setup

To configure IE4 for browsing the Internet with alpha dot net, complete the following instructions.

Important: Be sure you have already configured your Windows Operation System to connect to alpha. For instructions see the main PC Setup page – Connect To Us.

Open Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.

Click on View.

View - Internet Options

Select Internet Options from the menu. This will open the following screen.

Homepage Settings

Under the General tab, in the Home Page section you can select the Start Page that Internet Explorer will show when it is initially opened. You have three options:

Use Current will use the current address in the address window; or
Use Default will use the default homepage (probably a Microsoft Website such as msn.com). You can also set your own by typing the url into the Address field provided. For instance http://www.alpha.net.au or http://www.google.com
Use Blank will use a blank page.

Click on the Connection tab.

Click the Settings... button.

Dialup Settings

Use the following Dial-Up Networking connection: alpha dot net (or whatever you named your alpha dot net configuration)
Log on to this connection using the following information:
User: yourusername
Password: yourpassword

Click OK.

Proxy Server

Proxy Server
Access the Internet using a proxy server: Checked

Click Advanced.

Proxy Settings

HTTP: squid.alpha.net.au Port: 8080
FTP: squid.alpha.net.au Port: 8080
Gopher: squid.alpha.net.au Port: 8080

Click OK.

Connection and Proxy server details should already be completed from the setting your've just entered.

Click Apply

Click OK to save and exit the Internet Options and return back to the Internet Explorer browser window.

Your IE4 setup in now complete.

Enter a URL

You can now enter a Web address (URL) — www.somewhere.com — (for example www.google.com for searching the Web) and click Go, or press your Return key.
Note: You need to have already setup your connection to alpha dot net – see the Connect To Us options below.


WindowsOS Version!?!
USERNAMES & PASSWORDS    
Usernames and passwords are case sensitive (MYusername is different to myusername, myPassword is different to mypassword) and should contain no spaces. Be sure your "CapsLock" is not on when typing them.
These not only identify you to us as clients, but they are vital to your security for email and connectivity. Always keep your password stored in a secure place.
