Netscape 6 - Setup

To configure Netscape 6 for Internet, email and newsgroup access, complete the following instructions.

Important: Be sure you have already configured your Mac to connect to alpha. For instructions see the main Mac Setup page – Connect To Us.

Web Browser Setup

Navigator requires no additional configuration to surf the Internet. Once you have configured your Mac to connect to alpha dot net, double click on the Netscape 6 icon to launch it and you are ready to surf the Internet!

Launch Netscape 6 by double-clicking it's icon. You can now enter a Web address (URL) — www.somewhere.com — (for example www.google.com for searching the Web) and press your Return key. Netscape should use your alpha dot net configuration details, connect to the Internet and display the Site.

Email Setup

Launch Internet Netscape 6 by double-clicking it's icon.

From the menu at the top of your screen select Edit – Mail/News Account Settings.

Note: If Mail/News Account Settings does not appear in the Edit menu. From the Edit menu select Preferences. Once in this window click the Appearance category and choose Netscape Mail. Close Netscape 6 and re-open. This will create a Mail/News Account Settings option in the Edit pull down menu.

Selecting Mail/News Account Settings will open the following window.

Click New Account. This will start the Account Wizard, configure as follows.

ISP or email provider: Checked

Click Next.

Your Name: Your Name
Email Address: yourusername@alpha.net.au

Click Next.

Server Type: POP Mail Server
Server Name: mail.alpha.net.au
Server Name (SMTP Server): mail.alpha.net.au

Click Next.

User Name: yourusername

Click Next.

Account Name: alpha dot net mail
You can name this anything you like but we recommend alpha dot net mail for easy refernce later.

Click Next.

Click finish.

You have successfully created a mail account.

Continue if you'd like to configure your newsgroup account.

Newsgroups Setup

To set up a news account go to the Edit pull down menu and again select Mail/News Accounts Settings. Again, click on New Account.
Note: If you've just created your email account the details should now appear.

This will start the Account Wizard. Configure as follows.

Newsgroup account: Checked

Click Next.

Your Name: Your Name
Email Address: yourusername@alpha.net.au

Click Next.

Server Name: news.alpha.net.au

Click Next.

Account Name: alpha dot net newsgroups
You can name this anything you like but we suggest alpha dot net newsgroups for easy refernce later.

Click Finish.

You have successfully created a newsgroup account.

Setting up your Netscape 6 browser is now complete.

USERNAMES & PASSWORDS
Usernames and passwords are case sensitive (MYusername is different to myusername, myPassword is different to mypassword) and should contain no spaces. Be sure your "CapsLock" is not on when typing them. These not only identify you to us as clients, but they are vital to your security for email and connectivity. Always keep your password stored in a secure place.
