MacOS 7.6 - 9.2 - Connecting

To configure MacOS 7.6 through 9.2 for alpha dot net access, complete the following instructions.

There are three Control Panels we'll be using, all accessable via your Apple menu (top left of your screen) – Control Panels.

No need to open them yet, we'll go through their configuration one at a time in a moment. However, check that you have them on your system. If they aren't available you'll have to install them from your System CD (Custom Install):

• Apple menu – Control Panels – Modem
• Apple menu – Control Panels – TCP/IP
• Apple menu – Control Panels – Remote Access or PPP

STEP 1
From the Apple menu at the top of your screen select Control Panels – Modem. In the Modem Control Panel enter the following:

Connect via: Internal Modem
Most modern Macs come with an internal modem – it's built into the computer.

However, if you have an external modem – the modem is a seperate box you need to plug into the back of your Mac:
You can plug your modem into either the Printer port or the Modem port. Check where the modem is plugged into the back of your Mac – if the port it's plugged into has a printer icon select Printer Port for Connect Via, if the port has a modem icon select Modem Port.
Then, select your modem model from the Modem drop-down list (the manufacturer and model number should be on the modem).

Sound: On
This is not actually needed but a lack of modem sounds when trying to connect will indicate a problem. You can turn this off later if you wish.

Dialing: Tone

You can now close the Modem Control Panel. If you're asked if you'd like to save changes to the configuration click Save.

STEP 2
From the Apple menu at the top of your screen select Control Panels – TCP/IP. In the TCP/IP Control Panel enter the following:

Connect via: PPP
Configure: Using PPP Server
Name server addr: 203.41.44.20 (press return) 203.41.220.30
Search domains: alpha.net.au

You can now close the TCP/IP Control Panel. If you're asked if you'd like to save changes to the configuration click Save.

STEP 3
From the Apple menu at the top of your screen select Control Panels – Remote Access or PPP. In the Remote Access or PPP Control Panel enter the following:

Connection: Registered User
Name: yourusername
Password: yourpassword
Save password: Checked
This will save you entering your password every time you login.
Number: 82189000

Click Options and then Protocol and enter the following:

Use Protocol: PPP
Connect automatically when using TCP/IP applications: Checked
Allow error correction and compression in modem: Checked
Use TCP header compression: Checked

Click OK.

You can now close the Remote Access / PPP Control Panel. If you're asked if you'd like to save changes to the configuration click Save.

Setting up your MacOS internet connection is now complete.

Launching any program that requires an Internet connection will now use the configuration you've just created. See below for details on configuring your Internet software (for example your Web browser).

USERNAMES & PASSWORDS
Usernames and passwords are case sensitive (MYusername is different to myusername, myPassword is different to mypassword) and should contain no spaces. Be sure your "CapsLock" is not on when typing them. These not only identify you to us as clients, but they are vital to your security for email and connectivity. Always keep your password stored in a secure place.
